STOCKHOLM+50
Shaping the conversation around Stockholm+50
Several dialogues and a report on how economies and the financial sector can accelerate sustainability and biosphere stewardship will be presented ahead of the high-level UN meeting in June 2022
- The 50th anniversary of the first United Nations conference on the human environment will take place 2-3 June 2022 in Stockholm
- The deliberations from dialogues hosted by the centre and the Beijer Institute, will be presented in a synthesis report delivered to the Stockholm+50 meeting
- The public launch of the report will take place 1 June at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in collaboration with the Nobel Foundation
As part of the upcoming high-level UN meeting Stockholm+50 in June 2022, Stockholm Resilience Centre and its founding partner Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics will produce a report and co-ordinate a series of dialogues on the role of economic metrics and the finance sector in the Anthropocene.
The outcome will contribute to the meeting which is hosted by the Swedish government to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first United Nations conference on the human environment – the 1972 Stockholm Conference.
Dialogues for a new economic agenda
In a series of dialogues under the headline Economy and Finance for a Just Future on a Thriving Planet, leading scientists, international organizations, investors, and other change-makers will deliberate on a new agenda for economics and finance, and define tangible pathways for action for our living planet and for prosperity for all.
The dialogues are organised in collaboration with a range of international partners. The deliberations will be presented in a synthesis report delivered to Stockholm+50 and contribute to its ambition in becoming the moment in time when the world shifted to a path towards a just and safe future.
The report will include chapters that each summarize key research insights and present new data and recommendations on how economies and the financial sector should help accelerate a step-change in ambitions towards sustainability and biosphere stewardship.
Stockholm+50 could become a key international event that helps accelerate action for sustainability. We are delighted to be able to help shape the conversations ahead of, and during this important international meeting.
Victor Galaz, deputy director of Stockholm Resilience Centre and the Beijer Institute programme director
There will be a public launch of the report 1 June at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in collaboration with the Nobel Foundation.
“Science, including transdisciplinary sustainability sciences, play a key role as the world strives to achieve a sustainable future for all. Stockholm+50 is an excellent opportunity to get this message through in these very turbulent times”, adds Galaz, who initiated the project.
Economy and Finance for a Just Future on a Thriving Planet is commissioned by the Swedish Ministry of Environment as an independent input and contribution to Stockholm+50. The work builds on the Nobel Prize Summit 2021, Our Planet, Our Future, an international scientific initiative on sustainable development hosted by the Nobel Foundation.
