Where to find us at the UN Biodiversity Conference COP15

In a single human lifetime, we have grossly simplified the biosphere, a system that has evolved over 3.8 billion years. Now just a few plants and animals dominate the land and ocean. This simplification poses a huge risk to the stability of the human-nature systems we all depend on.

Despite decades of increasing investment in conservation, ‘bending the curve’ of biodiversity decline has not succeeded.

This might now change.

From 7-19 December 2022, the UN Biodiversity Conference COP15 will convene governments from around the world to agree to a new set of goals for nature over the next decade through the Convention on Biological Diversity post-2020 framework process.

Experts from the Stockholm Resilience Centre will be heavily engaged at this COP15 in Montreal:

Indigenous peoples, local communities and the post-2020 global biodiversity framework

Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities are key partners to achieve the 2050 vision: living in harmony with nature. The post-2020 global biodiversity framework should benefit and recognize their contributions at the local level.

This side-event for which SwedBio is one of the co-convenors provides their views on the current draft of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

How a human rights-based approach can deliver a truly transformative and just post-2020 global biodiversity framework

8 December 2022, 18:15 EST; Side event 1, 512E

Building on previous dialogues and publications, this side event will draw attention to how a human rights-based approach can significantly contribute to achieving the targets and goals of the post-2020 GBF in effective and just ways and lead to a world in which people live in harmony with nature. SwedBio is the main convenor for this official side event.

Subnational Governments and Cities Pavilion

8-18 December

For the first time at a CBD COP, there will be a dedicated pavilion, focusing on subnational government and city actions and opportunities. This pavilion provides a wide variety of engagement opportunities, announcements, celebrations, bilateral meetings and in-depth deliberations.

The pavilion is hosted by ICLEI. SwedBio will as part of its work on urban areas contribute to some events.

Indigenous and local communities small scale fisheries: local stewardship for the implementation of the 2030 biodiversity conservation agenda

10 December 2022, 16.00 EST, Side-event room 1, 512E

This will be an interactive panel of small-scale fisheries representatives from around the world, sharing their experiences and suggestions to ensure a truly transformative biodiversity agenda. SwedBio will be co-convenor for this side event.

Nature and Culture Summit

11-12 December, livestreamed here

The aim of the Nature and Culture Summit is to generate new pathways for intercultural, intergenerational and international cooperation to integrate nature and culture in the implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, towards the shared vision of living in harmony with nature.

SwedBio is supporting the summit with interpretation. Centre staff Pernilla Malmer will in addition co-moderate a roundtable session.
