Tiina Häyhä's research focuses on developing approaches for operationalising the planetary boundaries framework for different sectors

Häyhä is a researcher within the Planetary Boundaries Research Lab, working with global sustainability issues. Her research interests include exploring challenges of human development and global environmental sustainability. Her current research focuses on developing approaches for operationalising the planetary boundaries framework at sub-global scales and for different sectors.

Recently, she worked in a project commissioned by the European Environment Agency and the Environment Knowledge Community to improve understanding of planetary boundaries and a safe operating space at the European Union level.

In collaboration with Ellen MacArthur Foundation, she studies how circular economy can help deal with global environmental issues, with a particular focus on textile industry.

Her other research activities, together with PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, investigates global energy pathways in the context of UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The project assesses quantitatively the role of the energy sector in a broad set of global environmental change and human development issues.

Häyhä holds a PhD in Environment, Resources, and Sustainable Development from Parthenope University of Naples, Italy. She has a background in environmental and ecological economics, environmental assessment, energy, and ecosystem services.

She is involved in a number of international networks including Future Earth Fellows, and the IIASA Alumni Association.
